HoneyBunny Gets Answers!

Yesterday we made the trip to Tucson for a followup visit to the Gastroenterologist.  HoneyBunny (HB) finally got some answers regarding his condition.  First good news was that the biopsy came back negative!  (Thank you, Jesus!)  Second...Enough of the puzzle pieces have been assembled for the doctors to come to a diagnosis.  The swallowing problem is due to a disease called Achalasia.  It is a problem with the motility of the esophagus.  They also concluded that the initial  procedure may have caused some of the weakness that we witnessed in the last swallow test.

Long story short - there is a light at the end of the feeding tunnel...er, uh...tube!  Oh, it will need to stay in for awhile, until another procedure or surgery is completed, and the doctors are certain that all is well.  Once they take it out, that's it...so they must be sure.  If I am hearing right, he will begin to eat regularly, but taking it slowly for awhile, and still taking some nutrition through the tube.  Once he can swallow enough to get all the nutrition he needs by mouth, and the esophagus is working correctly, then the tube can be removed.

More tests will be needed, and more doctor visits.  We will need to stay on our every-four-hour schedule for food and meds for a period of time.  We will need to schedule the procedure or surgery, whichever the doctors decide is the best option for now.  It looks like it will be the procedure, since it is less invasive.  If that is successful, there will be no need for surgery.  Whew!

So, "Nurse Nancy," that's me...is still on duty until further notice.  I have learned more than I ever wanted to know about the digestive system in the last few months.  I wonder if I could be certified in esophageology!  (giggle)  HB knows more than he ever wanted to know now or ever, too!  But, we are relieved to have answers to our questions....and, more importantly, to all of the prayers!  Thank you again for keeping HB in your hearts as he journeys down this road.  We love you!

  1. I am glad they have it figured out. That is the biggest hurdle of all. So many times they try over and over and over to come to some conclusion with no good outcome. I certainly will be praying for a successful procedure so that you can get your lives back. xo Diana
