Paper Dolls and Jacks

Here's another memory that popped into my little gray head today - playing Paper Dolls and Jacks.  Those must have been two of my very favorite things to do when I was a youngster.  My best friend and neighbor was Jerilyn and we played paper dolls a lot!  We had a gazillion of them.  We'd sit on the floor and play for hours.

I played jacks a lot, too.  Funny, I don't remember who I played with, but most likely it was anyone who was close enough to coax!  I think I was quite good at scooping those jacks up before the ball could bounce.  Playing by myself was also an option and I am sure I did that often, too.    What a contrast to the grandkids who now want toys that are electronic and cost as much as the national debt.  I'll take the good ol' days, thank you very much!

  1. Paper Dolls were a big item at my house. Mom knew I would always be happy with a new paper doll book. And remember some of the magazines would have paper dolls in them sometimes?

  2. Yes, we were watching Little Bear last night and they were playing marbles, pretty similar to jacks...I had forgotten! Marbles get a bad rap these days :-) Thanks for stopping by from the hop! I'm now following back!

  3. I always love playing with paper dolls and jacks, yes even at my "young" age, I still do play them with the grand-kids. On every imaginable magnetic surface we have the magnetic paperdolls and clothes for Abby. Each pack is like a dollar or two at Dollar General. They are worth every penny!!! She loves dressing them up and I love that she don't loose them this way. Everyone else plays with them when they come over as well.

  4. Love the blog! I remember playing with jacks. Paper dolls were a bit before my time. By the time I got there, they were magnetic. :-)

  5. OH Pat, Do I remember paperdolls? They were wonderful. I had dresser drawers full of them. I was an only child and I can remember playing for hour upon hour. I also played paperdolls with my cousin, Pat. She was also an only child and we were like sisters and enjoyed numerous sleep overs.

Do you remember having all the latest movie star paperdolls? Also, McCall's magazine always had
"Betsy" paperdolls in the back of each isssue.

I didn't play jacks much. I wasn't good at it. I have never been good at things one has to do quickly.

    Thanks for the wonderful memories.
    Hugs, Ginger

Oh how I remember the paper dolls! Sometimes we couldn't afford new ones so my sister and I would use cutouts from the Christmas Wish catalogue - furniture and all. We kept busy for hours.
    Thanks for the memory.

  9. Thank you all for shaing your memories and love of paper dolls. We were so easy to please, weren't we? We could entertain ourselves for hours! I do remember the Betsy ones! and even making my own cut-outs for clothes! (Don't worry - I was no serious threat to any clothing designers!) LOL
    Hugs to each of you,

  10. I was just thinking about paper dolls this week. They were so much fun. My granddaughter has magnetic ones! I think that is such a great idea because I still remember when I wore off the tabs to the clothes. We never seemed to have tape at our house, so my doll never got to wear those clothes again. I remember my Mom teaching me how to play jacks. Thanks for the good memories.

  11. I loved playing with those items as well. We had this perfect spot for jacks in our house. It was right in the middle of the hall, wooden floor, perfect.
