Meet Jacob and Moses!

We are now the new "people" for these two guys!  If you saw my previous post, Goin' To The Dogs you already know that a friend of a friend of mine was trying to find a home for Jacob after his owner became too sick to care for them.  She didn't say much about Moses, thinking no one would take such an old dog.

We met them on Saturday and it was instant love.  Of course we could not just take one and leave the other!  No way that was going to happen!  At the time we visited them, they literally had the run of the house, with a dog door to go in and out.  It was quite a mess.  The friend had been going out once a day to feed them, and the rest of the time they were on their own.

We agreed to take them in right then.  They hopped right in the car and rode quietly all the way to our house.  I made a mad dash for Pet Smart, spent a bundle and came home with collars, leashes, beds, dog dishes, toys, treats, etc.  Monday I called our veterinarian and made an appointment to get their shots updated.  Fortunately they had been to the same vet, so they have records, although limited.  We now know Jacob is 8 years old and Moses is 12 years.

In the last two days they are settling in and getting adjusted to our rules.  They are so good, very smart, and loving to the max!  They want to be right with us, following us from room to room, sleeping at our feet, and watching our every move.  Whenever I sit down at my computer, they are right here with me till I get up and go in another room.  Moses whines when I leave the house.  And, the best part is that our dog sitter can't wait to meet them and spoil them rotten!

Life is good!  Ruff!

Goin' To The Dogs

We got a phone call yesterday.  A friend was calling on behalf of a gentleman who is in the hospital and very ill, who needs to find a home for his two dogs.  She was referred to us by another friend who knew we had to put our two dogs to sleep over the last six months.

Really, I thought HB (HoneyBunny) would say not now, since we are about to take on the "Great Kitchen Redo," but his soft heart said "yes."  There is no way he would take a chance that two dogs would end up in the pound because they didn't have a home.

We are going to go meet the dogs this morning.  While we have not yet given a definite "yes" to this, we are going with leashes and blankets to cover the back seat of the car - just in case, doncha know!

All we know is not much.  One is an five year-old lab or golden retriever male.  There seems to be a difference of opinion on the mix.  He is a "love" according to my friend.  He also wiggles from nose to tail tip when he gets some attention.  I can live with that.  His name is Jacob.

The other is an older male of unknown (to us) origin.  He is fifteen, but we are told he has no serious health issues.  The friend only briefly mentioned him, thinking no one would want such an old guy.  His name is Moses.  We could not imagine taking one without the other.  After all, we know what it feels like to be shoved aside just because you are old.  Sorta, anyway.  Not that we have been shoved aside, but it happens to folks our ages.  We understand how this can happen.

So, what do you think?  Will we come home with new family members?  Stay tuned...I'll let you know how it turns out.

Kitchen Redo ~ Before Photos

Pat's Galley Kitchen - before

Pat's Galley Kitchen - short side with some backsplash removed

Pat's Galley Kitchen - upper cabinets, false ceiling

Colors in dining area - this is the yellow that will be on the kitchen walls.

The totally UGLY 8" tile that has needed replacing since Columbus sailed the ocean!  This wasn't in the plan until today when I woke up mortified that if we waited to replace the tile, we would damage the new cabinets when our Favorite Fix-It Folks blasted the old tiles off the cement slab!  So...sigh...another piece of the redo.

Okay, okay - so I just needed something (Oatmeal Raisin cookies)  to give me comfort through all this stressing!  Is that so bad? I'll work it off...really!

There you have the before.  It isn't the worst kitchen on the planet as is, but the sink is stained and old, the counters are scratched and stained, and the sprayer leaks, so we have had some of this on our radar for months.  We also hate the tile and the false ceiling.  So, we are taking care of everything at once.  I'll try not to bore you with this, but I will post periodic updates as things progress.  While we are waiting (5 weeks) for the cabinets, the ceiling and floor will be under construction.  That should be fun!

I am still torn between being excited and stressed.  I will be counting on your comment/hugs to help me through all this.  Will that be okay?

The Unplanned Kitchen Redo ~ BooHoo or WaHoo?

The leak is no more, the new kitchen is soon to begin...all because trouble lurking behind a wall dribbled onto the cupboards and eventually onto the floor.  No flood, just wet wood and some mold.  As it turned out, the culprit was a pipe that leads to nowhere.  It was probably for the hot water heater or washer before previous owners converted the garage into living space.  So, our Favorite Fix-It Guy just capped it off and that is that.  Whew - major worry, minor expense for this part.

The damage has been done, however, and the lower cabinets in the kitchen must be replaced.  Of course, you can't just bring in new bottom need to replace all of them so they match.  This is something that was in our long range plans.  It wasn't supposed to happen yet.  Since there is no choice now, we are forging ahead with this must-do project.

Martha Stewart Ox Hill

The order has been placed.  Martha will be pleased.  The photo above is the style of cabinets to give you an idea.  We aren't going fancy, just practical.  The color doesn't show well in the picture, but it will be a green with yellow highlights.   The walls will be a pale yellow.  The counter top will be Corian in Moss green.

Corian - Moss

So, step one was ordering everything yesterday.  Step two will be tearing out the false ceiling, adding new lighting, and preparing the walls for the cabinets.  Step three will be selecting cabinet knobs and handles, a faucet for the sink, etc.  I will post some before and after photos as this progresses.  It will take five weeks to get the order, but the prep work will keep us busy in the meantime.

Can I tell you something?  I am excited, but also bummed.  Yes, I did want my kitchen updated.  No, our budget didn't have room for this - yet.  We normally plan ahead for these kind of projects.  This was thrown in our laps with few choices.   The damaged cabinets must go.  I don't know if I should be whooping it up or crying.  Really...

OPALS ~ We're Off Our Rockers

Tonight was the regular monthly Monday Merriment for my Red Hat chapter (Plum Crazy Ladies).  There were twenty two of us laughing, carrying on and attempting to plan our future activities.  It is always a fun time.  We aren't all OPALS, but we are "off our rockers" and out having a good time together.

It is so important as we age (there's that pesky word again!) to be active - no couch potatoes allowed, please.  We need to keep our joints moving and our muscles toned to the extent that our arthritis and lumbago lets us.  I just tossed that word "lumbago" in here 'cause I like it.  Haven't any idea what it really is, but it doesn't matter for this post.  *giggle*

Walking, biking, going to the gym, even vacuuming and dusting can count!  Move, Girls, move!  Dance, skip, hop if your knees will let you.  Run, jog, get out the Wii Fit!  Wiggle, jiggle, laugh out loud, too!  It's all good!  Be an OPALS kinda Gal and you will love your mirror once again!  You/we will look better, feel better, and have more energy.  Sigh...I sure need more of that - energy.

Now, where did I put that exercise bike...oh, there it is, right beside the couch!  Puff, puff, puff...peddle, peddle, puff, puff, puff...Whoooo!

Sunday Blesssings ~ Our Water Leak

Last Monday I blogged about a leaky problem we have - Life Is Full of Drips.  Since our favorite Fix-it Folks have now been here and investigated, I can give you an update and explain our Blessings.

A peek under the sink made it clear the wood was wet and there was a horrible musty smell that would gag a rat.  A hole drilled in the other side of the wall, which is where my washer and dryer are, revealed evidence of leaking, but no wet spot.  Another hole caused a *gasp* and provided the proof...water and mold.  Sigh...

It was not immediately clear which pipe was the culprit, so Tuesday morning, our favorite Fix-It Folks will be back to drill into the cement slab.  Ugh...    Here comes the blessing...are you ready for it?   We had expected the problem to be in the drain since the floors were not flooded as one might expect from a water line leak.  However...this was not the case.  The leak is coming from a water line, but it is a slow leak.  It appears that the cabinets soaked it up.  The blessing is that it did not burst and flood two rooms of our house, ruin belongings, etc.  Except for the kitchen cupboards.  They must be replaced.

This week I will blog about the progress and consequences of this drip that has taken over our lives.  We will have some major expense and minor inconvenience, but in the end, we will be blessed with things new, things dry, things beautiful.

Stay tuned!

10 Things On My Desk

1 -Books read...waiting for a written review.

My life can be summed up by looking at my desk.  It is cluttered with half-finished projects, notes for future blogs, Christmas cards that were returned as undeliverable, and so on.  Littered with distractions that spell trouble for someone who writes a blog!

2 - Red frog on Purple Jar

There are things I collect, like frogs, books I have read and need to write reviews for, a Handbook for my Red Hat chapter that is half way through a revision.

3 - Police scanner in case I hear sirens.

Standing on the side of the desk is a scanner for when I want to listen in on local law enforcement.  Hiding under stacks of papers are more papers waiting to be filed, photos of a friend's new baby, stray screws, cough drops.

4 - Volunteer button from Relay For Life

It isn't out of the question to find bubble gum, water, eye drops for my dry eyes sitting next to my printer.  Or a stray Relay button or two.  Relay is a big part of my life.  I know so many who have or are battling cancer.  I have had several skin cancers removed.

5 - Printer sitting off to the right side.

Once a month my printer has a big job to do, printing out the six-page newsletter I put together for my Red Hat chapter.  It screeches, clunks and whines, but it faithfully produces a nice, clear copy for each of the ladies.

6 - Gizmo, my web cam.

Staring out from the top of my computer monitor is Gizmo, my cute little web cam.  It reminds me I can be visible to the world, or my family should I decide to do that.  I sometimes Skype my family and am always amazed that we can see each other, even when they are hundreds or thousands of miles away.

7 - Lip moisturizer (it's the desert after all).

Keeping my lips from chapping in this dry Arizona climate is a full-time job, so I always keep lip moisturizer handy.  It is right next to the two ink cartridges that are sitting here ready to replace the empty ones in the printer.

8 - Greeting cards that are late getting sent out.

There was a time I was early or right on time mailing greeting cards to family and friends.  Now I am just barely on time or late.  It is a mystery to me why.  Perhaps because I am not as organized as I was when I was employed.  Now I have too much unstructured time on my hands and an unstructured desk that loses things.

9 - Red Hat pill case.

Just as Relay is huge in my life, so is Red Hatting.  I have red and purple stuff in every room - figurines, hats, stuffed bears, jewelry, clothing, tote bags and more.  So a purple pill case on my desk is no surprise.  It is waiting to go into a new member "tool kit" that I give each new lady.

10 - Reminder that tax time is nearing.

Even junk mail finds its way to the bottom of the paper stack.  A reminder that it is almost tax time peeks out from notes and filing.  It is right next to an ad from a warehouse store and a bill that needs to be paid next month.

It would be very easy to title this 110 Things on my Desk if I wanted to be more exact, but I didn't want to scare you away!    It is a mess and I am not proud of it.  In fact, I promise to clear the debris and show you a picture of the way is is supposed to look in a neat, organized world.  I can do it.  Really...I can & I will!

What does your desk look like?
