Counting My Blessings One Friend At-A-Time ~ Part Three

Some friends come into our lives for a short time, others stay in our hearts and our lives forever.  Glenna (as I shall call her for the purpose of blogging) is a forever friend.  We have known each other for nearly forty years.  We met when we worked together in Omaha.   When the company transferred me to Denver, I brought her with me.  We became roommates and were together almost constantly.  Life was good.

On weekends, we would hear the mountains outside of Denver "calling" us and we'd pack a lunch and take a road trip - an all day trip - to somewhere different each time.  We would go up on one road and come home on another, listening to Willie Nelson singing "On the Road Again" on the car's cassette player.  We talked, we laughed, we stopped to sight see, we took pictures, and we made plans to go out again in two weeks.

Glenna lives in Nebraska now and I live in Arizona.  We haven't seen each other in many years, but we talk on the phone a few times a year.  We still laugh, we cry, we catch up on what our kids and grandkids are doing, we compare aches and pains like older women are apt to do.  I miss her terribly, and I know she misses me.  Life just doesn't seem fair sometimes, when good friends are separated by circumstances.

Blessings in the form of good friends are so precious.  I treasure each one.  As I write these Sunday Blessing blogs I am finding no shortage of "treasures" to tell you about.  It would bless me doubly if you'd tell me about one of your best friends in your comment.  We can then, be blessed together!

Hugs & Happy Sunday!

  2. One of the blessings of a forever friend is that when you do connect, via phone or internet, it's a timeless moment that begins anew! How wonderful to have friends to talk with, to shop with and to laugh with. It just feels like good medicine for the soul! I enjoyed reading your post on friendship!

  3. You certainly have a wonderful friend Grace. Your story gives true meaning to this quotation -"Friends are God's way of taking care of us." I have several friends from my school days. We still keep in touch but unfortunately they all live far away. It is good that we can still keep in touch via emails and the telephone. Have a good Sunday Grace.

  4. My best friend is a guy I went to college with. He still lives in Indiana and I in Arizona. While we usually only talk once a year (our birthdays are only one day apart)I know he is always there for me. If I truly needed him he would jump on a plane and be with me in a matter of hours and I would do the same for him.

LadyD, yes...it is like we were never apart - we can pick up right where we left off!
Judy you are right about email and phones keeping us close when the miles do not.
Sandy how wonderful that you have someone in your life who would drop everything to help you if you needed him!
    Hugs to you all, GraceinAZ

  6. How does that old saying go. Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold.

  7. Wonderful post. Those friends that we maybe aren't around all of time but every conversation whether it is a week or 2 years, it is as if we just pick up where the last one left off. Those are treasures of the best kind.
