It didn’t take long to gather up a Royal Court of ladies of a certain age – over fifty – to come play with me and dress up in purple with a Red Hat! We’d make plans and have outings and innings and parade around in our finery or in our jammies depending on what the occasion called for. In fact, we still do that. Playing dress up and having recess is what we do. We choose to not be invisible as older women sometimes are.
Turns out this is a wonderful Sisterhood for women of all ages, especially the older ones who may be widowed or alone or ill. It gives women a reason to get dressed up (or down) and get out ~ laughing and chatting with new friends and old. Women find an instant support group, the sisters they never had or friends they need in order to survive loneliness. In other words, being a Red Hatter is perhaps the most important part of some women’s lives as they advance in age.
